Theologoumena

The Anthropology of Theology and Other Theologoumena [Theologoumena, plural of theologoumenon, a theological statement which is of individual opinion and not doctrine.]

How much you wanna bet?
Discontinued in 1971, as a consequence of multiple Second-Vatican-Council liturgical reforms, was the alapa (Latin for “slap” or “blow”) that was previously administered by the Bishop upon the face of the confirmand during the Sacrament of Confirmation. The alapa was based on the medieval practice of the colée, the blow on the cheek given to new knights in many versions of the knighting ceremony. The gesture was meant to mark the completion of a candidate’s journey in becoming a soldier of Christ. I’m guessing there’s an organized movement afoot, not only to bring back this tradition, but to bring it back good and hard.

Why not bring back the full medieval slap at Confirmation?

While You’re At It

These (choir stalls) were, probably still are, the two biggest antiphonally-situated pieces of furniture in Westmorland County, PA. They inspired a cartoon I drew on my iPad using Paper 53 back in 2013.

Sometimes I hear the divine Voice saying, “Here we go again.”

I practice a (nearly) daily form of meditation, which is mostly done “on the cushion,” and which, combined with yoga twice a week, helps me come to my senses. I’m not sure how this happens; my hunch is that, by focusing more attentively on breathing and the actual information being delivered to me by my own senses moment by moment, it feels like all those useless scripts and dead end algorithms are being sucked out of me.
