When it comes to accelerating extinction…

…we’re breaking records.

E 27th St. Cypress Missile Defense HQ

I love this little house on E 27th St., just down the block from us, on its own corner. Those two Cypress Trees are so strategically positioned! They remind me of missiles. Add the flag, and I think of it as the neighborhood’s civil defense headquarters.

Shade

But it’s dry heat. Today’s high was something like 102. Tomorrow, 108.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far. If there’s a tree in the parking lot, anywhere in the parking lot, and a space under it to park, that’s where you park!

Water Tower

The Water Tower near the Merced County Fire Department, McKee Station, on which is written (in lettering much finer than depicted here) Merced, Gateway to Yosemite is not very far from Yang’s Produce Stand right there on McKee.

I’m intrigued by this water tower for some reason. When I drive by and stare at it, I’m afraid I’m going to cause an accident. So I thought I’d get some of it out of my system by trying to illustrate it in its beautiful setting.

Out Back

A rough estimate, rounding things up and over to the nearest one thousand as it slowly gets dark.

Propiopasta and Culture

I’d much rather maintain a collectivist, communitarian perspective; but, when it comes to defining culture – and, don’t worry, we’ll get to pasta soon enough – I’ve always liked how Ward Goodenough distinguished between private culture and culture in general, Cf. Cooperation in Change (1963:260). In Culture, Language, and Society (1971:31, 1981:98), Goodenough subsequently coined the term propriospect to shed additional light on this important distinction in perspective. Let’s look at culture in general first and then propriospect (Goodenough 1981:98) … and then PASTA:

Culture consists of
standards for deciding what is,
standards for deciding what can be,
standards for deciding how one feels about it,
standards for deciding what to do about it, and
standards for deciding how to go about doing it
.

Propriospect [An individual’s private, subjective view of the world and of its contents – his or her “personal outlook.” Note: Goodenough considered using the Greek derivative, idiorama, but ultimately went with the Latinate, propriospect. See? We’re closing in on pasta!]
Included in a person’s propriospect and indeed, dominating its content are the various standards for perceiving, evaluating, believing, and doing that he attributes to other persons as a result of his experience of their actions and admonitions.

Simply put, propriospect is to culture as ideolect is to language.

I think it’s very helpful to look at culture(s) from both of these COGNITIVELY-ORIENTED perspectives simultaneously and in all cases. Otherwise, we might easily get carried away by overlooking Goodenough’s distinction and embracing only one perspective to the detriment of the other. For example, in pasta making…

Outstanding in His Field

Every time I’d see Karl, I’d ask him about his donkey, and each time he’s say, “He’s outstanding in his field.”

Update: The Karl I was referring to was Karl Runser, whom I work with at ILGARD, now the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service. Sadly, a couple of months after moving back to Athens, OH in 2023, I learned of Karl’s passing. Please take a look at Karl Runser’s obituary. He was a man of integrity, honor, and wit, and it was a pleasure to get to know him on road trips to meetings and workshops throughout the Appalachian counties of Ohio. As outlined in his obituary, prior to working at Ohio University, Karl was Managing Editor of the Athens Messenger.

Check out this 1997 C-SPAN video to see Karl talk about the Athens Messenger:  https://www.c-span.org/program/vignette/athens-messenger/175405

I drew this donkey on an iPad Pro using the Paper 53 app. I was thinking of Karl the whole time.
