“Beginnings,” A Commissioned Digital Drawing of a Sculpture on the Campus of UC Merced

Several months ago I was commissioned to render a digital drawing of the “Beginnings” sculpture situated prominently on the UC Merced campus. The image was printed on fine paper, matted, framed, and presented as a gift. “Beginnings,” was conceived by noted American sculptor Aris Demetrios, and according to the official website “consists of two gently curving, vertical stainless steel arms, each about 40 feet high, rising from a large circular base.” (Click here for further details)

A dream about teachers

Others have had dreams; I have one too. I dream that we will always be appreciative of the men and women who defend our country and who sacrifice so much; however, I dream that we will learn how to become as appreciative if not more of the men and women who teach us and remind us of our lifelong commitment to learning and improving. I dream that it will become customary for us all to go out of our way and approach teachers with humility, hand shakes or hugs, and expressions of gratitude like, “thank you for your service!” I dream that one day teachers will walk in parades and that as they pass by, our applauding will drown out all of the marching bands.

Guardate la bella luna

The other night, after we went to see Dunkirk, now that’s patriotism, and had a beer at the 17th St. Pub, we strolled over to Bella Luna for another beer and some great grub. On the way out Ann snapped a shot of the Bella Luna food truck out front. She’s got such a good eye! She’s always on the look out for cool things that I might draw on my iPad.

Worshiping at the One Corinthians 13 Mirror

I hope I don’t have to unpack this one, but please let me know if you’d like me to. I will say this much. Nobody says “One Corinthians” or “Two Corinthians,” except for President Do You Have Prince Albert in the Can. So there’s that. Now about Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians, Chapter 13, spiritual maturity, love, faith, and hope, oh and dirty mirrors, you’ll have to read it on your own. I’m so fed up with fundamentalists staggering into politics…ok, that’s all I’ll say. That reminds me, it’s forgiveness that we need, as we discussed before here.

Two Digital Selfies

I did this photo-referenced self portrait a day before my left-eye cataract surgery in Art Set Pro, an iPad painting app that I hardly ever use. Here’s how it came out:

I was curious how it would look after a little tweaking in iColorama, in particular, by adding a pixelating effect. Here’s how that turned out:

Then the day of the procedure, when I was barely able to see or stay awake, I did a similar self portrait, this time in Paper 53; and this is how that turned out:

Since I like the pixelating effect so much, I subjected the image to the same tweaking as the image above.

Ofie…and Yoga

Back in March of 2014 I illustroblogged about Ofelia or Ofie, click here for that; but, I thought I’d take another, rough stab at sketching her – from a grainy photo I snapped with my iPhone after practice one day – since she’s played such a pivotal role in my breathing, movement, and core in the last 3 1/2 years.

I’ve posted more than 30 digital drawings, paintings, and cartoons about being a beginner yogi, going back to the first months of portfoliolongo. If you’re so inclined, and willing to click on “older posts” several times at the bottom of the webpages, please click here to see all posts tagged “yoga.” Some are more serious than others, but I take my practice very seriously.
