W&J’s Old Main in Washington PA

A rough, very free-hand, and quick sketch of Old Main on the picturesque campus of my alma mater, Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, PA drawn on my iPad Pro using an Apple Pencil in an app called Paper 53 and another called iColorama and based on a personal photo. Just below it is another digital painting done previously on my iPad in the Procreate app of the Washington Trust Building and surrounding cityscape, a view that repeatedly caught my eye whenever I’d sit on the hillside in front of Old Main as an undergraduate from 1974 to 1978. (See related post related to Jefferson College and Washington & Jefferson College.)

I drew Old Main on a visit to my hometown, Canonsburg, PA while sipping an 1802 Cream Ale on nitro at the Rusty Gold Brewing. I was sitting at the bar painting on my iPad, and the curious bartender asked me if I was carrying any prints on me for sale. I was; a little paper print of this image from this post. She bought it and put in on a shelf; see below. Awesome, eh?

“Beginnings,” A Commissioned Digital Drawing of a Sculpture on the Campus of UC Merced

Several months ago I was commissioned to render a digital drawing of the “Beginnings” sculpture situated prominently on the UC Merced campus. The image was printed on fine paper, matted, framed, and presented as a gift. “Beginnings,” was conceived by noted American sculptor Aris Demetrios, and according to the official website “consists of two gently curving, vertical stainless steel arms, each about 40 feet high, rising from a large circular base.” (Click here for further details)

Ofie…and Yoga

Back in March of 2014 I illustroblogged about Ofelia or Ofie, click here for that; but, I thought I’d take another, rough stab at sketching her – from a grainy photo I snapped with my iPhone after practice one day – since she’s played such a pivotal role in my breathing, movement, and core in the last 3 1/2 years.

I’ve posted more than 30 digital drawings, paintings, and cartoons about being a beginner yogi, going back to the first months of portfoliolongo. If you’re so inclined, and willing to click on “older posts” several times at the bottom of the webpages, please click here to see all posts tagged “yoga.” Some are more serious than others, but I take my practice very seriously.

Please feel free to leave a comment if you have something to say about yoga or anything related to breathing in the living moment.

Thinking about Hannah Arendt

…and what happens in the absence of genuine education, when propaganda and marketing hollow out one’s voice… [prompted by this article shared by a friend]

“The constant lying is not aimed at making the people believe a lie, but at ensuring that no one believes anything anymore. A people that can no longer distinguish between truth and lies cannot distinguish between right and wrong. And such a people, deprived of the power to think and judge, is, without knowing and willing it, completely subjected to the rule of lies.
With such a people, you can do whatever you want.”

—Hannah Arendt, German historian and philosopher (1906–1975)

Under Construction

Somg 35 odd years ago in Pittsburgh, PA I learned an expression that came to mind the other day while I was stopped dead in my tracks heading west on Olive Avenue in Merced, CA. “The shortest distance between two points is under construction.” The expression has come up before on this illustroblog, click here for further details.

I used an iPad Pro with Apple Pencil in Procreate on this.

Imagine

Started this one off in Paper by Fifty Three, brought it into Procreate for reconstructive surgery, sharpened it in iColorama, and added the text in Phonto.
