About portfoliolongo.com

ARTIST'S STATEMENT: I want my artwork to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable. I want it to shed light and call attention to beauty, coherence, and unity; and, I want it to cast doubt on falsehoods, oversimplifications, and absurdities. I’d like to be instrumental in deepening our awareness and appreciation of the fullness of life, including its complexities, ambiguities, and paradoxes. I draw and paint on an iPad with an Apple Pencil or my fingers using a variety of drawing/painting apps; although, I still work in wood and clay as well. iPads are portable and versatile, require little set up, and there’s no clean up. They’re the perfect medium for what I do. I can quickly convert ideas into illustrations and share them or time-lapse videos of them on social media. I can also prepare the images for printing on metal, paper, and canvas surfaces in a variety of sizes. BIOGRAPHY: Paul Longo has lived a relatively unconventional life. In his youth, he plowed through dyslexia (before teachers had ever heard of it) and learned that there is, indeed, more than meets the eye. In college, he read Don Quijote in Spanish for the first time and discovered an interest in anthropology. He went on to complete 3 graduate degrees and has lived and worked in 7 countries and 9 states since then. Paul has taught anthropology, education, Spanish, research and evaluation methods, and ESL at 6 different universities. These days he teaches digital art to adults with developmental disabilities and non-credit ESL to adults at a local community college. Paul was also a Benedictine monk and lived in a monastery for nearly 8 years, until he met and married his wife. Together they were survivors of Hurricane Katrina as residents of New Orleans. But it was not until 2013, while living in a downtown loft in Des Moines, Iowa, that Paul complained to his wife, a CIO in higher education, about not having either a basement or a garage in which to make art. A few days later she gave Paul her old iPad with an installed drawing app and said, “here’s a studio for your lap.” Since then, not only have iPads become larger and more powerful, but the number of drawing and painting apps has increased and each one offers a unique set of features to create original artwork. Nowadays, Paul takes his "studio” everywhere he goes. Throughout his eclectic journey, Paul has created and shared his art to make sense of the world, to give voice to new identities and experiences, and to engage more intentionally with others. Guardate la bella luna

The other night, after we went to see Dunkirk, now that’s patriotism, and had a beer at the 17th St. Pub, we strolled over to Bella Luna for another beer and some great grub. On the way out Ann snapped a shot of the Bella Luna food truck out front. She’s got such a good eye! She’s always on the look out for cool things that I might draw on my iPad.

Done mostly in Paper 53.

Side by side, free-hand, digital painting in Paper 53

When I think of Bella Luna, besides good food, drink, and atmosphere, I think of this scene from from Moonstruck. Please enjoy.

Something…

… under development. More on this later.

Started in Paper 53, then iColorama, even some PhotoSpeak, then Videoshop.

Worshiping at the One Corinthians 13 Mirror

I hope I don’t have to unpack this one, but please let me know if you’d like me to. I will say this much. Nobody says “One Corinthians” or “Two Corinthians,” except for President Do You Have Prince Albert in the Can. So there’s that. Now about Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians, Chapter 13, spiritual maturity, love, faith, and hope, oh and dirty mirrors, you’ll have to read it on your own. I’m so fed up with fundamentalists staggering into politics…ok, that’s all I’ll say. That reminds me, it’s forgiveness that we need, as we discussed before here.

Day #190 of the Fiasco

Nothing to say; except that I wish education had a greater impact than propaganda.

Two Digital Selfies

I did this photo-referenced self portrait a day before my left-eye cataract surgery in Art Set Pro, an iPad painting app that I hardly ever use. Here’s how it came out:

I was curious how it would look after a little tweaking in iColorama, in particular, by adding a pixelating effect. Here’s how that turned out:

Then the day of the procedure, when I was barely able to see or stay awake, I did a similar self portrait, this time in Paper 53; and this is how that turned out:

Since I like the pixelating effect so much, I subjected the image to the same tweaking as the image above.

What do you think?

Ofie…and Yoga

Back in March of 2014 I illustroblogged about Ofelia or Ofie, click here for that; but, I thought I’d take another, rough stab at sketching her – from a grainy photo I snapped with my iPhone after practice one day – since she’s played such a pivotal role in my breathing, movement, and core in the last 3 1/2 years.

I’ve posted more than 30 digital drawings, paintings, and cartoons about being a beginner yogi, going back to the first months of portfoliolongo. If you’re so inclined, and willing to click on “older posts” several times at the bottom of the webpages, please click here to see all posts tagged “yoga.” Some are more serious than others, but I take my practice very seriously.

Please feel free to leave a comment if you have something to say about yoga or anything related to breathing in the living moment.

Merced Art Hop Flyer Artwork – July 15, 2017

It’s a few days after the fact, but I thought I’d post a story about how one of my digital paintings became the poster/flyer for the Merced Art Hop, July 15, 2017. It all started back in May of this year (2107), when Kevin Hammon, one of the two founders of Art Hop, click here for details, contacted me and asked if I’d put together a drawing for the flyer for the upcoming July Art Hop. Kevin and Kimberly Zamora hadn’t ever asked an Art Hop artist to do the artwork for the Art Hop flyers; they wondered if I’d be interested in the opportunity to do something to convey “…the July Art Hop theme:’Environment & Renewable Energy’….” Indeed, I was interested and excited; but, it took me a few days to get back to Kevin. In a subsequent phone conversation Kevin elaborated on the renewable-energy theme and listed a few of the energy sponsors, and right away an image came to mind. Within minutes I cranked out the following in Tayasui Sketches (the actual Art Hop Flyer flyer can be found below the original, artwork):

What a treat, especially since I was a Merced Art Hop artist, stationed at Cue Spot Billiards, at this quarterly event on July 15, 2017.

Back to the Digital Drawing Board

Image

I started this Paper 53 piece last evening while stationed – along with 5 other Art Hop artists – at Cue Spot Billiards in downtown Merced, CA. The emotion that I wanted to convey was linked to my finding out that none of my digital painting entrees was selected by jurors for inclusion into this year’s top one hundred at the Mobile and Digital Arts and Creativity Summit (mDAC) 2017. You may recall that I had a piece selected in mDAC 2016 and one in mDAC 2015. This year’s winners are really awesome, click here to take a peek. So, I’m a little disappointed; but, I’m using the development as an opportunity to re-evaluate my artistic vision as part of the coaching and rebranding process that I’m currently engaged in. In that process I’m trying to articulate not so much what I do, or even how I do what I do, but rather why I do it. I’m having some insights, thanks to Adam James Butcher’s coaching process. So let me go back to piecing together some things and dismantling others.
